Gallery Neuartig opens its gallery space in historic downtown San Pedro with its inaugural exhibition GET OUTTA DODGE, presenting six artists from Las Vegas: Catherine Borg, Chad Brown, Evan Dent, Daniel Habegger, Stephen Hendee and Wendy Kveck. The artists work in various mediums and styles, from painting and drawing to photography, sculpture and mixed media and from abstract to representational.

Each artist brings a national or international exhibition history to Los Angeles including the Whitney Museum of Art in New York City, San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (SFMOMA) and the Zwinger Gallery in Berlin.

The exhibition opened August 5th and runs through September 25th, 2010. The gallery is open for the monthly San Pedro Art Walk on Thursday, September 2nd 6 PM – 9PM.

A reception to celebrate the gallery launch and the artists is held at the gallery on Sunday, September 19th, 4PM – 7PM.
Introducing the gallery’s motto "Neuartig gives as it receives" the gallery is giving away free 12-bottle boxes of a new kombucha brand, Búcha live kombucha, to every guest who donates $10 or more to art education at the reception. All proceeds go to an educational art program, ‘Artists in Classroom’, organized by Angels Gate Cultural Center, San Pedro.

The artists:

Daniel Habegger, a Swiss born, abstract painter and sculptor and recipient of the prestigious P.S.1 Contemporary Art Grant has previously exhibited in Germany and Switzerland, besides Las Vegas, NV. As Habegger points out “I have never seen a distinction between representational and abstract styles because, essentially, my paintings are about the process of painting itself.”

Stephen Hendee a sculptor who exhibits in museums and galleries nationwide and internationally including the Whitney Museum, the New Museum, and PS.1 Contemporary Art Center in New York City. Hendee’s drawings and sculptures take on expansive geometric architectural interventions resulting in a compelling presence of the work.

Catherine Borg works across multiple mediums utilizing video, audio, photography, drawing and sculpture. SFMOMA screened two of Borg’s videos in 2008 and her work has been presented in several solo and group exhibitions in Nevada, New Jersey and New York City.

Chad Brown is a representational painter with a blend of abstraction that is so strong you can almost feel the artist’s cogitation on the difference between the two. Brown won ‘Best in Show’ at the Las Vegas Art Museum in 2006, the same year he received his MFA from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas.

Evan Dent works with imagery from early 20th century studio animation. Taken out of their original context and tweaked, seemingly innocent characters become a bit of an unnerving experience. Dent has been included in public art projects and exhibitions nationally.

Wendy Kveck received an honorarium funded by the National Endowment for the Arts in 2007 and has been exhibited in Nevada, Texas, Arizona, Portland, OR and Chicago, IL. Kveck’s abstract work reflects on the representation of women as cultural signifiers of excess, desire, anxiety and fear - in woman as consumer and the consumed.
